Bukit Raya Tours & Travel is one of the very few tour operators that venture deep into the heart of Borneo. The journey begins in Palangka Raya, the capital of Central Kalimantan, and takes one full day by car (7h), by speed boat (3h) and 4×4 jeep (2h) to reach the upper Joloi River Valley.
The upper Joloi River Valley is a kind of huge “bowel”, surrounded by significant mountains. It covers approximately 5,000 km2 of mostly pristine tropical rainforest, 3 villages with around 1’500 inhabitants and one main river. The canyon leading out of this huge “bowel” has 5 major rapids, which have never been conquered by the local Dayak community. Therefore, the development of this special valley was totally different from most other remote areas in Central Kalimantan, because all kinds of human activities and trade had to be done crossing the mountains surrounding the valley.
Our tour guides will bring you into direct contact with the people who live in this valley. You sleep in their houses, eat their food, and share their toilets and bathrooms by the river. An authentic cultural experience where guests experience the way of life of the indigenous Dayak people. Together, we will learn about the concept of shifting cultivation and gain insights into traditional gold mining, hunting, fishing, and forest fruit gathering.
In-depth discussions will cover topics such as the use of natural resources, globalization, international trade, rainforest conservation, and indigenous agricultural systems. We will also learn about the animist and Christian beliefs found deep in Kalimantan and discover the direct and indirect influence religion has on the lives of indigenous communities.
We will also have the opportunity to take a short and easy rainforest hike to a breathtaking waterfall amidst pristine nature.
We would be happy to create a customized itinerary for this extraordinary adventure just for you!
