Just outside Palangka Raya, Pulau Kaja offers a rare chance to see semi-wild orangutans in a natural riverside setting. Located near the former BOS sanctuary, this pre-release island is home to orangutans preparing for life in the wild—or spending their lives safely in the forest. Guided boat tours around the island let visitors observe these incredible primates up close while supporting their conservation.
All around the former Orang-Utan sanctuary of Nyaru Menteng from BOS (Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation), there is a very special opportunity to encounter these amazing creatures. The endemic Borneo Orang Utan (Pongo pygmaeus) is threatened to vanish from the face of the earth due to ongoing loss of natural habitats.
At “Pulau Kaja”, close to the village of Sei Gohong, approx. 35 km outside of Palangka Raya, you can visit semi wild Orang Utan on a so called “pre-release” island surrounded by waters of the Rungan River. The primates are semi-wild and fed every day by the BOS rangers, some of them are in “training” to be released later back into the wild, some others will probably grow old there, because they cannot being released into the wild due to several reasons.
Tourists can book a tour on small boats to circling this pre-release island and watch Orang Utans in their natural environment and more or less natural behaviour. Our guides can never predict how many and which individuals you will see, but so far, we had never heard about tourists coming back from this half-day trip without seeing at least a handful of Orang Utans.
You can book tours to “Pulau Kaja” with Bukit Raya Tours & Travel. We will organize the tour with either one of our recommended freelance tour guides from Palangka Raya or, with our own guide from Bukit Raya Tours & Travel. Our guests will also have the opportunity to make a direct donation to BOS on site in order to support this amazing work and the future of “Pulau Kaja” tourist attraction.
The tour includes a visit to the local Dayak Museum in Palangka Raya (subject to opening hours), a roughly 30-minute car ride to and from Sei Gohong Tourist Village, the boat tour and orangutan observation, a light lunch at a local café, snacks, and optionally, a hike up the “Love Hill” in Tangkiling. The tour can be done as a half-day or full-day experience.
This tour can eventually also being combined with the hiking and biking tour from Bukit Raya Tours&Travel
