Sebangau National Park – Black Water River

Exploring the swampforests south of Palangka Raya by boat and foot, swimming in the blackwater river of Sei Koran and maybe encountering a real wild Orang Utan…

The Sebangau National Park has been established in 2004. Up to 1995, it was an official logging area and up to the establishment of the National Park, vast illegal logging activities has destroyed a lot of its diversity. The whole national park consists of swamp forests. Because the trees are rooting in peat, they normally do not grow very tall and tend to fall once reaching a certain hight.

The lowland swamp forests are habitat to Orang-Utans, Gibbons and many other species. One of the main entrance gates to the National Park is in Kereng Bangkirai, approximately 30 minutes south of Palangka Raya city. From the harbour, you can rent a wooden boat to cruise up on the Sei Koran. Sei Koran is small blackwater river flowing gently between nypa palms and other typical swamp trees such as Mangroves. You can visit several stations, take pictures, even swimming in the reddish waters, climb a observation tower or having a short trek into the forest.

Depending on the water level, you may get wet up to your knees or even more or you will be able to walk around with dry feet.

Since no wildlife is feed on feeding stations, it is rather unlikely to see wildlife. But, who knows, you may have the lucky day to see an Orang-Utan in wild by chance. But remember, there is absolutely no guarantee to see wildlife. The longer you stay, the more likely you will have encounters with wildlife.

The scenery on this beautiful river and especially the sunsets watched from the boat are spectacular!
